Defenders Drop Like Flies As Honey Badgers Earn 1-1 Draw with Verity
The field was covered with a light coat of dew as the Honey Badgers arrived for their early morning, 8am game with Verity. Unfortunately, the dew was brown, lumpy, and left near the touch line by some sort of bear-human hybrid and had to be removed with an old tent cover found in the trash can. (Your’e welcome).
With a lighter squad than last week, Cameron Road would have to do a bit of reshuffling in the line up, especially at the back. While Danimal was away taping his new informercial for “Honey Badger Body Bags,” Jefe figured to slot into central defense to partner New Chris. Problem was, instead of sitting back in his chair before the game, Jefe tried to “warm up” and somehow managed to “do something” to his knee which put him on the shelf and out of the match.
The bold move was made to put Old Chris in the center of defense with New Chris to form a follically-fantastic all Chris unit. This seemed to stun Verity right out of the gate since the Honey Badgers started off the game with about 20 straight passes.
Shortly thereafter though, Big Dave pulled up lame as his manly calf exploded in BT-like fashion, putting another defender out of the game in the early minutes. With Bret unavailable, the outside defensive spots were occupied by some unfamiliar faces as Billy, Jake, Andy, Ryan and Chappy all took shifts throughout the 90 minutes.
Andy almost became the 3rd defender to go down as he blew up his hand on his first challenge, but he was able to rub some dirt on it and get back to fouling people.
The Honey Badgers were doing well in the early 15 minutes and nabbed a goal off a Verity mistake when their keeper played a suspect ball out of the back and Derek pounced on it like BT at a Brava shoe sale at Academy. 1-0 Cameron Road.
The rest of the half was pretty even, but you know, it was early and who can actually remember.
Oranges
Verity was putting the Honey Badgers under some pressure to start the second half as they looked to get back into the game, and they were rewarded with the tying goal. From there, both squads went at it to try and get the win. Cameron Road’s best chance came from a fantastic curling strike from Ryan that just nicked the edge of the post – that would have been a worthy winner had it gone in.
But in the end, both teams settled for a hard-fought point as Cameron Road’s unbeaten streak continues.
Man-of-the-Match: Sporting the best hair on the team, Chris Peterson stood up and played a hell of a game in central defense. He was barking out orders, clearing balls, and not injuring himself like a champ.
