Summer Game #3 – Don’t Know How A Bunch Of Kids Can Already Be Austin Legends…. But They Beat CRU 5-0
Another week of hot summer action at Onion Creek today as Cameron Road United and friends faced off against yet another team without a gray hair in sight. Also another good week of subs showing up, including Twisted Tea Nick, Yunir, and the third tip of the Tiny Trident, Scott.
Nolan was back in goal for another week of action with his proud papa back prowling the back lines. Within 10 minutes, Chappy should have listened to him as he yelled “ONE TIME!” to clear the ball to safety, but he thought he had another second or two to latch onto the ball as it bounced inside the box. He did not as a youngin’ swept past him and stabbed the ball home for the opening goal. Chappy’s struggles continued at the back, most likely residual venom buildup from his wasp sting a week ago.
With the opener out of the way, the Honey Badgers got to work at the business end of the pitch. Gianluca and Derek were actually getting into good spots and firing off shots, so all hope was not lost. The kids were younger and did more running, but the Honey Badgers were not without some good attacks.

Ciro’s little knee was bothering him, so he wasn’t too involved, but Conor, Matt, Yunir and Schwarzy were all available to soak up pressure in the middle of the pitch.
With another well worked goal to their credit, Austin Legends took a frustrating 2-0 lead into the half.
Adam was gone, and he not only was he missed on the pitch, but his replacement oranges were semi-impenetrable and must have had some kind of carbon fiber coating on them. Thanks for nothing Trader Joe’s. On the flip side, Jake’s frozen cantaloupe slices were the stuff of legend.
Yunir got into the game in the second half and stared to protect the ball, which was something Cameron Road was struggling with as the kids were constantly receiving turnovers and turning into attacks.
The details were not important, but three more goals were dropped on the Badgers during the second half. It could have been more if not for Nolan’s continued heroics, and Guillermo’s badgering of the referee (pun intended!) into reversing his p/k decision for a hand ball in the box. There goes Chappy’s continual on-field speech of “THE REFEREE NEVER CHANGES HIS CALL!!!” The Badgers were breaking down barriers here.
To be fair, there were goals to be had for Cameron Road. Gianluca fizzed a few hard shots wide. Derek got into good positions inside the box. Pete bobbed and weaved to get a shot off until gravity finally took over. Yunir got a ball trapped in his feet from point blank range from a corner kick. They just weren’t going in.
Game over, but the post game made up for things…. as it usually does.
Man-of-the-Match: Jake’s 2nd tent and frozen halftime treats were enough to get the big prize today.
Post-Match-Report: The icings were cold. The drinks were plentiful. There was a tiny rain cloud over the Badger Den. Ciro got drenched. Things will be better next week when Cameron Road faces off against a familiar, age-appropriate Chopped Liverpool, hopefully with a win.
