CRU 1 – Celtic Cowboys 2
The “Battle of the Pubs” lived up to the hype, but unfortunately for us, we eneded up on the wrong side of the score sheet…. again. Not even the return of our former star forward, Jared, could boost us to victory and a much needed 3 points.
It turned out to be a pretty timid game as these matches with Celtic go, both sides were well behaved and playing some decent football. To be fair, we were very unlucky not to at least get a deserved point from this game; we had uncharacteristic missed shots from point blank range, sure goals come off the posts, penalties not called… you name it. If we continue to play well though, our luck has to turn.
The first half was a tight affair with both teams playing pretty good defense. Celtic probably had the best of the offensive exchanges, but our D stood strong and we were all tied up at the half.
If the first half was a defensive stalemate, the second half was a blaze of offensive action. Celtic struck first in about the 55th minute, but we came roaring back to tie up the score. Someone (Chris?) blasted a long range shot that deflected off one of Celtic’s defenders to put us level. After some back and forth action and a few misplaced passes, Celitc scored again to go up 2-1. We never crawled into a shell though and continued to press for the equalizer. I though I had scored just that goal when Jared and some defenders collided and the ball ended up in front of me as I headed toward goal and fired off a shot…. but the far post had other plans and the score remained 1-2.
And that’s how the game ended. It’s a shame, because we played well, maybe the best of the season, and really deserved a point. And so we sit in an unfamiliar position, at the bottom of the D2 table. But we’ve got a good chance to claw our way up from the cellar when we play Shiner FC this Sunday at 3:40pm.
Man of the Match – This week’s award goes to Billy Milton. He played a great game, especially in the first half, where he was holding down the right side of defense- a position he doesn’t normally play, but maybe should think about more often. And to have him quiet as a church mouse playing against Celtic…. well, that goes without saying that he was on his game for sure.
