Honey Badgers Close Out the Season with 4-1 Win Over Marioooooo and Team Somerset
That’s a wrap. Cameron Road United defeated Team Somerset on their final game of the season 4-1 with two goals from Danimal, a penalty from El Jefe and an Andy Michaelis bomb from downtown. It was looking like an easy win, especially when Team Somerset only fielded 8 players to start the game, but it didn’t start as planned.
Cameron Road found plenty of space to operate, and found themselves breezing down the flanks with space to spare. The Honey Badgers unchained Jay from the shackles of his twin post prison and sent him to the tip of the attack sporting a #10 Rooooooney jersey. No doubt his Shadowcat-like shifty movement made the 8 Team Somerset players nervous as to his motives – a tactical advantage for CRU.
With the Honey Badgers smelling the blood of a nearly-dead cobra in the air, they went on the attack, but for all their time in the Somerset half, it was the enemy who drew first blood as Jefe decided to make things interesting by hacking down their player inside the box. With the penalty converted, Team Somerset surprisingly took the lead, much to the chagrin of the CC United crowd on the sidelines.
Knowing that it was only a matter of time, Cameron Road continued to press and found the equalizer when Danimal strode up from his defensive position. His trademark bull rush run into the box was met with Adam’s cross and the game was back on level terms. And with that effort, Danny took his turn back in goal to spread the love. Soon after that, Andy found himself deep in midfield with the keeper out of the goal. His long range missile strike ended the Golden Boot debate and put Cameron Road out in front for the first time.
Z could have added to the lead, but while staring at an open goal, his thoughts were on his eventual aquatic attack of his Captain and his momentary lack of concentration caused him to squander his chance. Not to worry, he would score one of his greatest goals later that night at the Crown.
With more position shuffles in the second half (Ryan in Defense, Dave in goal, Andy in goal, etc) the Honey Badgers enjoyed the lion’s share of possession. In fact, they probably had the ball in Team Somerset’s half 90% of the time. The attacks were coming in from all angles. Ryan took turns peppering the goal, Ciro had a close-range shot saved, Adam tried to get his Badger Fro onto anything, Chappy had a hat trick of missed headers, Crosley tried to relive his Celtic Cowboy glory shot, Luke almost bested his league-winning volley with one that went just wide, Gianluca pretended it was Clark Field. You get the idea.
With a cutback to his left foot and a quick shot inside the box, Chappy’s shot struck a Somerset defender in the arm and the team was awarded a penalty. With some jockeying for position, El Jefe ended up the lucky one to take the spot kick. His powerful shot blew through the keeper’s fingers and the Honey Badgers were up 3-1.
Danimal closed out the scoring by sending the ball into a nearly empty net from distance after the keeper came out to parry away the ball from an onrushing Chappy.
In the end, it could have been double digit goals, but it was a satisfying way to close out a spectacular year as Champions.
With the season wrapped it, the after party had just begun which included an hour long sesh at Onion Creek complete with awards ceremonies, customary binge drinking, victory champagne, and a sneak attack dousing (#1) of Captain Chappy by his arch nemesis…. El Jefe.
Taking the party to the Crown, the Honey Badgers continued their victory tour well into the night with burgers, more beer, songs, speeches, another round of burgers, still more beer, and a disturbing new trend: public water dousings! Chappy was hit THREE TIMES at the Crown with sneak attacks of water bearing kamikazes. Twice he was soaked by Jeff and Zoran as Danimal looked on with eyes that betrayed nothing. And a third time he was attacked in the bathroom stall of all places by his usual pranking partner Ryan. Chappy may have left the bar shivering and soaking wet, but there was never a more satisfying ride home knowing that the Cameron Road United Honey Badgers were Champions.
Man-of-the-Match: He drove in from Dallas, he played defense, he scored a double, he played goalie, he gave away nothing as his Captain was viciously attacked with cups of water…. all hail Danimal.
