10 Man Cameron Road Fall to Austin Athletic Club 0-2 in the Season Finale.

All things considered, a short handed Cameron Road United closed out the most forgettable of seasons with a gritty 10 man performance, featuring a player that had never even seen the pitch for them. Thanks to Andy’s friend, and newest teammate Adam, for strapping on the yellow jersey and giving it 90 minutes. Adam will be a welcome face starting this summer.

Considering that they were facing the #1 team in the division down a man, holding Austin Athletic Club to a 0-0 draw in the first half (against the wind) was a sign that Cameron Road would not walk into the D2 sunset quietly.

Dermot was a constant thorn in the collective AAC side as he slotted into central defense along with the big man, Cuyler. The first half was a simple task for Cameron Road…. defend, defend, defend. With the winds in their faces and a determined Austin Athletic Club surging forward, Cameron Road did well to hold the line and keep most of the shots from way outside the box.

An early goal from AAC (offside?) let a little of the wind out of Cameron Road’s sails, but these 10 men weren’t about to fall apart at the first sign of adversity. Instead, they attacked with Cuyler’s booming goal kicks hoping to use the strong wind to their advantage. Adam probably came closest to scoring as he ran onto a ball inside the box, but Ciro and Willis also had cracks at goal.

As AAC scored a second goal, the pressure was really on Cameron Road to mount a comeback. And on their only corner kick of the game, they apparantely scored when Chappy backed his way into the keeper who fumbled the ball beyond the line…. although no goal was given.

Cameron Road ended the game with Jay making a brilliant save off a blistering shot from the Mad Russian.

And so ended a disappointing season filled with close losses, injuries, blowouts, marriages and the departure of defensive leader Bob.

But fear not, Cameron Road picked up two quality signings in Danny and Adam, and will soon be on the hunt for Summer League glory starting June 12th.

Man-of-the-Match: Let’s give newcomer Adam some credit for showing up for his first game on a shorthanded team, facing the #1 squad in the division, and being asked to play 90 minutes for the first time in forever.
