Morelia 4 – CRU 2
The summer slide continued yesterday as Cameron Road United fell to Morelia 4-2. Although they were outplayed in the first half and went down by three goals, it’s wasn’t all doom and gloom as the Honey Badgers fought back and had the better second half. Late goals scored by Way and Dermot ignited the comeback against another young, upper division opponent.
As if a Way Shong visit wasn’t special enough, Cameron Road got their second game out of John Ammerman this year as an added bonus. With 18 honey badgers to choose from, Cameron Road was ready to go to work.
The first 5 minutes were pretty good and there was some good passing, but Morelia started to take control of the game. Damn those young legs! Within 30 minutes Cameron Road had dug themselves a three goal deficit. They did have a few chances to get back into the game though, the best of was Steve’s point blank shot that was smothered up by Morelia’s Tim Howard look alike. Ryan also had a nice move in front of goal but his finish was a touching tribute to his fallen teammate, Gigi…. TO DA MOON!!!!
The honey badgers were definitely not ready to give up the fight in the second half. Way’s comeback-starting goal was the catalyst that really got the team going. Way’s fist pumping reaction was classic Cameron Road enthusiasm that would earn him an extra special ice bath after the match.
With lots of chances being carved out around the Morelia goal, Cameron Road pressed for another goal. Unfortunately, Morelia struck again as one of their talented, young forwards ran the badgers ragged and smashed in a shot from 25 yards.
Still, even at 4-1, Cameron Road continued to assault the goal. Chappy found McKenna at the back post for a shot. John Ammerman teed one up from his top-of-the-box wheelhouse. BT and Cuyler sent in multiple free kicks. But they just couldn’t find the back of the net.
Near the end of the match, Dermot subbed in at forward and instantly started causing problems. His spinning point blank shot from 15 yards out went…. um…. slightly over the bar, but it wouldn’t be his only opportunity to close out the match on a high. Spotting him making a run on his right inside the box, Chappy flicked a hard fought header in the Irishman’s path and he smashed it into the back of the net for badger goal #2.
CRU actually would have won a penalty appeal as time ran out, but the ref decided to pack up and go home instead of spending another 45 seconds seeing out the final kick.
The Honey Badgers have a nack of putting together solid 45 minute periods…. just not two in the same game. Hopefully that will change in the final three games.
Man-of-the-Match: He flew in. His hair was tall. His dribbling was cricketesque. He scored a goal. He took a bath. WAY SHONG!
