DRAW: CRU 1 – Celtic 1 – Honey Badgers Gritty Performance On Opening Day Earns Them A Well-Deserved Point
The weather was gorgeous for the opening match of the 2025/2026 season. 70-something degrees and rainy. Beats the hell out of 100 degrees and 100% humidity.
With only one sub available and 90% of the defense missing in action, it was time to get creative with the back line. Led by Chris G, Brian Parks joined Chappy and Andy on the flanks. In midfield, Chris Peterson was back from injury and was mostly on the wing with Ciro, Scrwarzy, Pete and Jake. Up top it was the usual dynamic duo. Jefe was nursing a sore hammy and manning the tent, although he failed to keep his Captain’s chair dry.
Celtic had about 8 subs, but it was the Honey Badgers controlling most of the first half action. There were many chances up front and Gianluca’s bicycle kick made its season debut. Schwarzy had a few opportunities as well with some half volleys inside the box, but the Celtic keeper was up to the challenge.
Celtic struck first though when the scored from a breakaway, which was one of their only early shots of the game.
Jaybone made a world-class save to push another shot over the bar to keep the scoreline intact. Chris G was in charge of the defense and was a vocal leader as well as a heat-seeking missile. Along side of him, Parks was also impressive with his first action in months.
At the break, there were a distinct lack of oranges as Adam found himself in Iceland.
As the light rain continued to fall, the second half got underway and the action heated up and got more physical. Celtic were getting a little rough in defense, and Derek was not impressed. He earned himself a yellow card for a bit of a payback foul, but he managed to stay onside all day. Speaking of offside, Ciro found out what it’s like to play out wide as he was caught offside for the first time in years. Not sure if anyone heard, But Gianluca was also offside once…. Jefe might have explained this to him from the sideline.
With things getting heated up top, the new Badger defense was getting physical at the back. Andy was running down attackers. Brian Parks was pushing forward and covering a lot of ground. Chappy was actually passing the ball out to his teammates. But Chris G was absolutely smashing it as he battled with Celtic’s powerful and talented forward. They were going toe-to-to and Chris G was not backing down and inch. He also drove forward after winning a ball just inside the Celtic half and unleashed an absolute rocket of a shot.
Jaybone made another miraculous diving save to his right and thought he might have injured himself, but he was fine. Unlike the Celtic starting keeper to had to leave the game with an injury. With a backup keeper between the pipes, the Honey Badgers were smelling blood in the water.
But before they could unleash their full comeback attack, Ol’Schwarzy had to take a bit of a break as he took one square in the baby maker.
Derek won himself a free kick just outside the Celtic box and surveyed his options. There were Badgers at the back post, but Derek went for goal with a low shot that blew by everyone and ended up in the back of the net for the tying goal that Cameron Road deserved.
The defense shut down the rest of the frantic Celtic attacks and opening day ended with a hard-fought 1-1 draw. Good stuff from a shorthanded CRU squad!
Man-of-the-Match: Chris G was on fire. He covered every blade of defensive grass was a real force back there. Special shoutout to Parks as well as he was awesome as well.
Post-Match-Report: Rain, but the tents were doing tent stuff. Jefe rudely iced Chappy on Ciro’s behalf, and it was a cold one. Matty Red Card, Scotty and Verity Joe all made appearances as the Badgers watched Beerca (our next opponent) fall behind to Chopped Liverpool.
