CRU 5 – Liverpool 3

In an 8 goal thrilla, Cameron Road came out on top and got the first win of the summer season. It really wasn’t as close as the scoreline showed, but it was pretty exciting stuff.

First off, lets hear a round of applause for the return of Ciro to the pitch! 7 long  months after undergoing his second ACL surgery, Ciro came back and played really well yesterday. Great to have you back buddy.

Cameron Road started off in control of the game, knocking the ball around and creating some scoring chances early on. But, against the run of play, Liverpool snuck in a lucky goal off one of their only counter attacks. And actually, they didn’t score at all since their goal was the result of an unfortunate own-goal by the Cameron Road defense.

On the positive side, instead of going into a shell and imploding like last week after giving away an early goal, the troops rallied and continued to pile on the pressure until the equalizer came. In only his second game, Steve continued to impress from the forward spot with several marauding runs through the heart of the Liverpool defense, several times narrowly missing tying up the game. Finally, after a lot of pressure, BT floated in a perfect cross from the left hand side and Luke met it perfectly to power home a header. We got our equalizer and went into the half all tied up at 1-1.

The low scoring first half was replaced by a 6 goal explosion in the second. Steve’s hard work finally paid off as Peterson sent him a thru ball which he ran on, made a few moves, and then rolled it past the keeper. 2-1 Cameron Road. Then Liverpool tied it up on a corner kick when their version of Pat knocked in a header. Another one of our attacks ended up with Liverpool conceding an own goal to make it 3-2 Cameron Road. Liverpool came right back on another corner kick with the same guy knocking in another header. Crazy stuff, but it was 3-3. More pressure saw another Cameron Road attack end up in the back of the net. This time, Peterson played a ball back to BT at the top of the box (who went on to score), but was chopped down just before the pass got away. So he calmly stepped up to nail his first penalty kick attempt and we were back ahead at 4-3. To seal the deal, Willis did his best Ruud Van Nistelrooy impersonation as he gathered the ball deep in the box on the left side, wiggled his way around the defense, and blasted a nice shot into the back of the net from a really tight angle. Billy was impressed.

All in all it was a good game with nice goals scored and good team spirit. Let’s keep it up next week against the bruising challenges of our D2 BFFs, Vertiy.

Man-of-the-Match: In only his second game, you get the feeling that Steve is going to do some really good things and score a lot of goals. He was a constant threat running at the defense, and finally busted his CRU cherry with a nice finish. All against the team that he supports in real life. Well done.
