Honey Badgers Feast on Cobra and Send Wolverines to Bed Without any Supper

In the battle of early morning nasty-as-hell carnivorous mammals, there was only going to be one winner.  Honey Badgers 3 – Wolverines 0.

There was a bit of worry in the early morning Badger Den as Ciro was having trouble waking up. Luckily for him and the rest of the early risers, Gigi came equipped with a fresh batch of Columbian Tea to perk everyone up.

Without the services of Willis, Zoran or McKenna, the Honey Badgers continued their 4-5-1 formation which puts an emphasis on dominating the midfield. It’s been working like a charm all summer, and it did the trick again on Sunday. With that midfield domination, Cameron Road were able to exploit the middle of the park early as Ciro slipped in a ball down the center of the box to Chappy who was cutting in from the left wing. With a nifty turn, Chappy was in with only the keeper to beat. Either corner would have been fine, but Chappy’s blast smacked off the crossbar and flew back out into open play with the speed of Luke’s right hand snatching away a fresh plate of his Grandmother’s hot biscuits on a Sunday morning.

Moments later, Chappy spotted Adam with space on the right side and sent in a through ball for him to run onto. The speed at which Adam closed the gap to the ball was somewhat startling – a foreshadowing of things to come in the post-game melee. Adam snatched up the pass, cut back, and let fly a left-footed sizzler that narrowly went wide of the near post. Two good chances carved out by the Honey Badgers like it was Thanksgiving Dinner.

With the defense standing tall at the other end, the Wolverines didn’t have many positive attacks. New Chris was playing inspired defense and ran around like some sort of Honey Badger – Wolverine hybrid, Billy played his usual style of silky fitbol, Big Dave continued his streak of 47 consecutive game without getting rainbowed, Andy filled in a center back and broke up plays, and Danimal headed every damn ball away to safety as usual.

With everything but a goal to show for their efforts, the Honey Badgers were the recipients of a free kick about 30 yards out on the left side of the pitch. Travis drove the ball deep into the penalty box where Andy did what he does best – get in somebody’s way. This time it happened to be the keeper, and Travis’ shot went straight into the ol’onion bag. The Butterfly 1 – Wolverines 0.

Cameron Road came close to doubling their lead when Danimal violently leaped at BT’s shot inside the box, but the big defender just couldn’t make contact with the ball this time.

1-0 at the half, and things were looking positive for Cameron Road.

The Honey Badgers stormed out in the second half all guns blazin’. Within five minutes BT had set up Chappy for another one-on-one with the keeper, but this time his weak shot straight down the pipe was saved. Soon after, Ciro again unlocked the defense and put the bald hit man in for his third one-on-one. This time, Chappy would not falter as he gathered himself and rifled the ball past the keeper to the top left corner. 2-0 Cameron Road.

With the blood of the Cobra on their paws, the Honey Badgers wanted more. Fulfilling his early morning prophecy to “shoot more from distance”, Ciro go the ball at the top of the box and let one rip. His shot was narrowly pushed over the bar by the keeper. On the resulting corner, Dave pumped one to the back post (otherwise know as “Chappy’s House”), where the bald dome of power nuzzled up to the ball and sent it past the keeper for Chappy’s 2nd goal in 5 minutes. 3-0 Cameron Road.

With Gigi coming in for Chappy, the Honey Badgers presented the Wolverines with a different set of problems to cope with. Gigi’s pace and skill on the ball allowed him to get past defenders, and he was more than happy to find his teammates in scoring positions. He cut one back for Peyton on the left side of the box, but his pesky left food just wouldn’t find the back of the net. Peyton actually had a few nice runs down the left hand side, as did Adam on the right.

Jefe had a memorable moment as he did everything he could to track down a ball on the left…. until he fell down in a heap. But the effort struck more fear into the Wolverines and must have softened them enough for Billy to try a cheeky Clark Field scoop of a left-footed shot from close range.

With no more goals to be had, the Honey Badgers packed up shop and rode out the clock to victory. Another impressive performance for a team building up momentum in anticipation with this week’s Clark Field Derby with the Dragons. Look out Drew.

Man-of-the-Match: Having only conceded 1 goal in the past 3 games the defense has been playing lights out the past three weeks. Time to show them some love, and yesterday New Chris was as tenacious as a newborn Honey Badger searching for his first bowl of cobra soup.
