Lethal Outbreak of Soccer Breaks Out on Field #4 as Cameron Road Beats Grackles 1-0

Cameron Road United pushed their division leading lead to 9 points with a decisive 1-0 win over the Grackles.

In what was arguably their best overall performance, Cameron Road packed the sidelines 18 deep in yellow and blue (including the real “last game” by DannyWay Stujediashong), passed their way around the pitch with verve and panache, defended with reckless abandon and celebrated deep into the 3rd game of the day like only a pack of rabid Honey Badgers could do.

A special pre-match shout out goes to Danimal, who drove in from Dallas early Sunday morning to be at the game. Quality.

Without picking apart the game play-by-play, one must paint this performance with broad strokes, highlighting the overall team performance. There was pockets of  some beautiful stuff, as the Honey Badgers decided to pick up their passing game and spray the ball around. From back to front, everyone was getting in on the action.

With that ball movement, the attacks came from many different directions. Ryan hit the crossbar with one shot and had several others. Luke and BT fired in from deep positions. Cuyler smacked the crossbar with a wicked free kick. Ciro floated one just over the top corner. Adam had a close goal disallowed. Chappy had a scrum goal with the keeper disallowed as well as a diving header in the first half and another on frame in the second. Andy came close, etc. etc. On any other day, the Honey Badgers could have netted 5.

But it was Z who came through with the goods near the end of the first half with a scrappy goal that proved to be the game winner. Ryan picked up the ball deep in the middle of the field and played a great ball to Ciro out wide on the right. Ciro beat his man down the touchline, and whipped in a great low cross that flashed to Stripy inside the 6 yard box. Z’s initial touch was off, but he followed up his shot from his back and poked it past the keeper.

“I only touched the ball twice during the game, and once was goal, ” said the Bosnian sniper.

With the passing game in full gear and the chances coming, the defense also pitched yet another shutout and didn’t trouble Jay with much all game. The one Grackle chance in the first half didn’t amount to a decent shot as their #11 Pirlo look alike failed to take his opportunity. In the second half, the Grackles forward surged past the half line on a breakaway. Rather than panic, the defense spearheaded by Luke and Billy followed up the play and simply shepherded the attacker into a non-threatening position. Defensive play of the game for sure. The rest of the defense was solid as ever as El Jefe, Cuyler, Danimal, Peyton and Dave shielded Jay from danger.

Hell, Cameron Road even overcame the dastardly sight of our referee for the day as the Soccer Gods pulled a fast one with their selection.

So with another week gone, Cameron Road locks up another 3 points and inches ever closer to the division title.  Next up, and unknown quantity as the Honey Badgers face division newcomers CC United.

Man-of-the-Match: With a total team performance, the Spirit of the Honey Badger was ever present, flowing from the legs of each player like The Force.
