CRU 2 – Deportivo San Marcos 1

For the third consecutive week, Cameron Road put together a strong performance and ended up with another win as they beat Deportivo San Marcos 2-1.

Cameron Road started off briskly, passing the ball around and spending the majority of the time attacking the Deportivo end of the pitch. (Of course it didn’t hurt that Deportivo were a man down for the first 20 minutes) The Honey Badgers had a nice opening chance as Verity hired gun Charlie sent in a cross from the right side that Chappy headed wide. As Chris Peterson and McKenna arrived and entered the game, Cameron Road continued to push forward.

After the water break, Cameron Road got on the score sheet as The Italian Stallion earned a penalty kick. As he was unleashed and barreling towards goal, he got taken down from behind inside the box. Steve McKenna stepped up and slotted in the penalty after sending the keeper the wrong way.

And speaking of Wrong Way, Mr. Shong had another few opportunities at scoring right in front of the goal – he’s been sent to train with Barcelona for the week to work on his close range finishing skills.

Deportivo pulled back a goal as the cries of offside went out, but they fell on deaf ears as the referee marked the score at 1-1.

As the half came to a close, Charlie had another long range crack at goal, but his shot went wide.

The second half started with Deportivo gaining more ground and attacking with a little more frequency. They narrowly missed out on doubling their lead with an attack down the left, but the shot was right at Jay and he smothered it up like El Jefe with a pitcher of Guiness at the Crown.

Cameron Road thought they took the lead when Chappy poked in a fumbled shot from the keeper, but at the last minute a Deportivo defender managed to save it off the line. Where is goal line technology when you need it?

Not to worry, as Cameron Road would get the winner elsewhere. Enjoying a good 5 minutes of defensive work, Chris Peterson found himself in the right place at the right time at the top of the box as the ball bounced to him. Like a Honey Badger on a cobra, Chris pounced on the ball and it hit it on the half volley past the keeper for the game winning goal.

As the game wound down, tempers and temperatures heated up, as both teams continued to attack. Deportivo was desperate for an equalizer, but Jefe, Luke, Dave and Andy soaked up the pressure liked Grandma’s biscuits over hot gravy.

The game ended in dramatic fashion, as Charlie didn’t take kindly to one of the Deportivo players giving him the elbow business in the chest, so he took matters into his own hands and gave him a straight up Verity slide tackle. Unfortunately, it also earned him a straight up red card.  His Cameron Road-esque fighting spirit was rewarded with a post-match “badger shower” straight from Jeff’s cooler. Big thanks to Charlie if that was his final CRU act.

Man-of-the-Pre-Match: Suffering a mountain bike handle bar to the chest scenario the day before that landed him in the emergency room, Ciro was all smiles as he manned the tent and the beers from the comfort of the sideline.

Man-of-the-Match: In a tight game with lots of good play, if you get the game winner you also got yourself some silverware. Big Ups to CP who finished off Deportivo with his decisive second half strike.

Man-of-the-Post-Match: Gotta be Charlie for taking his shower like a man.. all smiles. And the mustache never moved.
