CRU 0 – Deportivo Fuerza 1
Tough loss. Damn, this one just got away from CRU at the death.

On a windy day up north, Cameron Road took on the league’s top dawg, Deportivo, in a battle of league bookends. Deportivo, riding a wave of victories and determined to stay top of the table, and Cameron Road, riding a string of victories but trying to get out of the cellar.
Cameron Road was boosted by the return of two injured players. Steve McKenna came back from a short term toe injury, and low and behold Chris Peterson was back! It’s been a while since we’ve had the pleasure of seeing Peterson’s perfect hair and passing on the field since his ACL surgery, but it was a welcome sight. Not sure if he had his doctor’s note with him, but when you’ve got Cameron Road blood running through your veins, it’s hard to stay away from the pitch.
For Cameron Road, this was a defensive battle. Deportivo was the better side offensively, with most of the possession and opportunities on goal. The CRU ‘D’ was able to tangle up the attacks at the top of the 18 and force shots from distance. On the rare occasion that Deportivo was able to break us down, Jay was there making save after save.
As the game wore on, it was looking like a 0-0 draw was going to be a great result for Cameron Road. Our offense was fluttering and most of our few opportunities came from fast breaks. Too often we were caught off side by Deportivo’s high back line, and too often we weren’t able to provide enough options to pass the ball around.
With ten minutes to go, there was a scrum in front of goal. Cameron Road tried desperately to clear the ball, but it was one of those situations where it just gets pinged back and forth and ends up getting poked into the back of the net. Heartbreak for sure since it was looking like a draw was on the books.
As the clock ran out, Cameron Road lost the game, but should feel proud about giving the top team in the league a run for their money.
Man-of-the-Match: Jay earned this one. He certainly had plenty to do stopping wave after wave of attack. And his point blank save in the first half was a thing of beauty.
