Honey Badgers Surge Into the Fall Season with 4-2 Win over Penneybacker United!

Last game of the summer and Cameron Road are starting to get their swagger back. With two tents, six subs, Lil’Dave, many coolers of beer and a new hat for Chappy, the Honey Badgers were ready to kick it into high gear.

I mean, come on! How cute is that?
I mean, come on! How cute is that?

Unfortunately, they started off in reverse, giving up a silly breakaway goal in the game’s opening minutes. But the Honey Badgers prefer to play from behind, and so they settled into playing their game. There was a new face between the pipes as Danimal returned from his sabbatical high in the Himalayan mountains of Tibet to lead the back line. Jaybone opted for his customary last game of the summer attacking midfield role, and had some legit moments in the field including a first half pop at goal.

With both teems seemingly on equal physical (non-over-30-premier) footing, it looked like it was going to be an entertaining match. In the early going, Ol’Schwarzy was showing his class in the center of the pitch dictating play and pretty much never turning the ball over. Cameron Road leveled the score as Derek grabbed a ball in front of the keeper and patiently waited him out, like Luke sitting in front of his Grandmother’s oven, just waiting for the biscuits to achieve their deep, golden hue. He scooped the ball to the near post over the keeper from about 2 yards out to level the score.

In the first half, Billy and Chappy rotated at right midfield, but it was the Scottsman who had the better run of attacking play as he twice got deep into the Pennybacker back line. Once he fired off a wee shot, and on his second foray into the box he sent in a fantastic cross.

At the back, Danny made some great saves, as well as watched several shots sail wide of their mark.

1-1 at the half and Adam’s oranges were magnificent, but Jefe’s sour licorice was just not up to Chappy and Verity Joe’s elite sour standards.

The second half started off strong with Cameron Road firing off a solid 20 minutes. Danny was booming goal kicks, Houston was starting to make his presence felt with his powerful runs, Verity Joe was a rock at the back and threw in a scorpion clearance, and Chappy cleared a ball from the box with the Bald Dome of Power that went about 40 yards. #CRU was trending.

But it was then that Penny backer decided to make their move with a second goal, daring the Honey Badgers to make a dramatic comeback. Fools!

Never panicking, Cameron Road got back to business and started pinging the ball around and Peterson stepped up to show Penny backer how to properly not give a shit while giving a shit as he unleashed a 30 yard bomb towards goal. Bad news for the Pennybacker keeper was that he hadn’t updated his email software in months, and was vulnerable to the Peterson aerial malware. The shot came in hot, the keeper got a touch to it, but he fumbled it back into the goal for a brilliant piece of skill from the Cameron Road 88. 2-2 and the comeback was on.

For the final 25 minutes, the Honey Badgers were on the hunt. Houston and Gigi were getting some deep runs, Bret was bombing down the right as an overlapping fullback, Chris G was unleashing his nasty brand of defense, and Ciro’s core temperature was borderline.

The third goal for Cameron Road was a thing of beauty as Danimal worked the ball out of the back to Gigi at midfield who flicked it with dental precision into the path of Houston for a 1 on 1 with the keeper. No chance that Cameron Road’s fantastic set of humble young legs would miss as he drove the ball into the back of the net for the Honey Badgers to take the lead.

Throw in a second scrappy goal for Houston near the game’s end to round out the victory in what was a glorious end to the summer season.

The Honey Badgers finished off the season with 6 solid halves of play and will take some positive steps forward as the real season starts next month. With a few rumored reinforcements coming online, things are looking rosy for Cameron Road.

The Postgame lived up to the regular game. There were jungle chants at the CC United keeper’s tiger stripes, a Smashing Pumpkins and Uncle Fester sighting, a customary Ciro icing, a Billy icing, a Chappy water bath, beers, snacks, bones, and one tiny (full) beer absolutely smashed by size 13 vans. It was glorious.

Big thanks to EVERYONE who sweated it out this summer season! And a special shoutout to the guest players, Joe, Ruebin, Messi and Houston. After taking quite a beating for 12 months, things are finally turning around and the nightmare is officially over. BRING ON THE PUNTERS.
