CRU 5 – Austin Athletic Club 0

Steve McKenna warms up his robo-knee before the match.

The Cameron Road United summer reign of terror continued with an impressive 5-0 win against Austin Athletic Club today. Just before a freakish summer rain storm hit the Onion Creek fields, a storm of goals washed up on field #5. Thats an impressive 11 goals to none in the last three games for the boys in yellow, as the winning streak hits three games.

Once again, a strong team took the field, with 16 players available for duty. Cameron Road took the initiative early and looked to carve out some chances. Just like last week, it was Luke who looked most likely to score from his trademark spot on the left flank. After getting clattered in the back on a 50/50 challenge by the keeper, Luke took the spot for a penalty kick and rolled it into the left corner – not his most powerful effort, but they all count just the same. And just like last week, Luke was close to scoring a hat trick in the opening half with another trio of shots on goal, one of them with a great assist from Gianluca. A great job by him for setting the tone.

And speaking of Gianluca, you just knew it was coming… the bicycle kick. Unfortunately, his trademark Clark Field shot was from about 25 yards out, so it wasn’t as effective as planned. But it sure was fun to watch him bust it out. Mark my words, he will be rewarded with glory one day with an overhead kick, it’s in his DNA.

With Danny heading away everything at the back, and and Andy continuing his streak of “keeping it real” and not fouling anyone, the defense was looking solid. With Billy getting his Hurricane on in the Big Easy, Crosley slotted in at right back with Dave at the left. They helped Jay have a not too busy afternoon at the back.

Holding on to a slim 1-0 lead at the half, Cameron Road still felt good about their chances to get a win with their dominant play. The trio of Scotty, Ciro and Willis controlled the middle of the pitch, while Way ,Adam and Chappy ran the flanks.

After several good looks in the box by Stripy, and some nice interchanges inside the box by the Cameron Road attackers, the second goal finally came. Old man Willis threaded a perfect ball to Ciro’s feet, and Ciro dropped in a Manny Mistry special over the head of the keeper and just under the crossbar for a 2-0 lead.

With the bit firmly in their teeth, Cameron Road attacked with abandon and were rewarded with a third goal. With honey badger like tenacity, Scotty attacked a ball off a corner kick, but the Austin Athletic Club keeper saw to foul him with a shove to his back. On the rekick, Scotty thumped in a wicked header that was saved. The ensuing melee inside the box produced a goal from McKenna from close range for a 3-0 lead.

After the water break, it seemed like there was no chance of getting back into the game for Austin Athletic Club. Cameron Road snuffed out their attacks with Crosley and Danny clearing balls from the half line. Willis, Chappy, Scotty, Ciro and Gianluca all played some nice touches inside the right side of the box, but it was Ciro that again popped up with the deuce. Basically, some stuff happened over on the left side of the field and Ciro ended up pumping in his second goal of the match and Cameron Road’s 4th of the afternoon.

And if that wasn’t enough, CRU was able to put the final nail in the coffin with a another deuce by Steve McKenna. Danny won a goal kick and headed it down to Chappy who played in Steve inside the box. Steve took a few touches and beat the keeper with a shot to the far post.

So for the third week in a row, Cameron Road pitched a shutout at the back, and poured in goal after goal for another great win.

Man-of-the-Match: This week there’s a tie for the honors, with two players (Ciro and McKenna) netting 2 goals each.
