Clubbed by ‘Merica. Honey Badgers Roll 4-1
Week two and the Honey Badgers are sitting pretty at the top of the table. Who woulda thunk it?
A 4-1 victory against Club America yesterday saw them ascend to the top of the standings with an impressive performance. The Honey Badgers traded in their 5% possession game from last week and switched to a blistering full on assault that ran 4 forwards deep thanks to the mid-week signing of Carlos, Cameron Road’s goal-scoring prodigy of decades past.
The Honey Badgers jumped on Club America quickly and got off on the front foot. With Danimal, Billy, Bret, Jefe and Andy shielding Jaybone at the back, the midfield was busy getting balls to any of the forward combinations of Derek, Gianluca, McKenna and Carlos. But it was a midfielder who struck first blood as Peterson hit a nice one-time left-footer that would have made BT proud. Chris hit it with an uncustomary low lunar orbital trajectory which gave the keeper no chance. 1-0 CRU.
The Honey Badgers were feeling it, and Jake made a deep run to smash in a rebound to make it 2-0 CRU.
At some point Club America got one back… may have been right before oranges, or just after. It was about 400 degrees and everyone was pretty much suffering from Ciro-like heat strokes.
As the temps heated up, so did the attitudes on the pitch. The referee wasn’t the best, dishing out phantom calls (Peterson on a goal kick, really?), and ignoring blatant ones. He even gave Gianluca a yellow card for walking off the pitch, because he was injured. Strange.
While the Honey Badgers walked the line of keeping their cool, it was just too much for Club America to take as they had a player sent off for arguing with the ref. After that, it really opened up the game and the Honey Badgers went straight up cobra hunting.
Carlos was doing well getting his legs in Cameron Road’s funky style of play as he found Chappy at the back post for a header that went just past the post. (you should have scored baldy!!). Minutes later, he set up the nail in the coffin as he played in Chappy (who managed to stay onside to the delight and bewilderment of Danimal) on the right side of the box. Chappy took a few dribbles at the keeper but there was a 4-1 yellow break in play and he slid the ball across to Derek who was first in line for the tap in.
Several minutes later, the Honey Badgers scored an almost carbon copy of the goal as Carlos again worked it into Chappy who got it to Derek on the left to put past the keeper.
At 4-1, there was no way back for Club America, and the game ended with the Honey Badgers really picking up maximum momentum for this week’s Crown & Anchor Darby with the Punters.
Early days, but this is looking good.
Man-of-the-Match: Peterson is usually putting it up for someone else, but his first half strike set the tone for the win.
